- Suzanne, the Farmer's Wife
Good morning, Heidi. I have an award for you at my blog.
ReplyDeleteStray voltage is the electricity that somehow strays away from the wires or some darn thing and it causes the cows to milk much less..My former sister in law and brother in law had it on there milk cow farm and it causeed them alot of grief and a big drop in milk production. worked for years literally to get the electric company to acknowlege the problem and they have since sued the electric company over it all...
ReplyDeleteWe have really big power lines that run from the plant towards Appleton about 1/2 mile from our house, and when I walk under them I can hear the buzzing. I've heard other farmers say it can put their cows out of sync with freshening or put them off their feed. I haven't seen it in our neighbors, so I don't know. I'm sure the sound makes people worry.
ReplyDeleteit comes from old, and/or overloaded power lines. When some of the current can return thru the power lines, it ends up going thru the ground, ect. and anything in its way (especially dairy farms, with moisture and metal equipment) can be injured, and/or made very sick, even deathly sick. It can even "zap" humans and other animals similarly, if they happen to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, and are touch metal, are wet, ect ect.
ReplyDeleteReally, its something that needs to be fixed by the power companys, as it affects alot of innocent people/animals :(
I wanta see the Milk DUD!
ReplyDeleteI know this one... WOW. Going along with what other have already said, it also causes a cows SCC to rise, you have breeding problems, testy kicky cows, it's all the stress!!
ReplyDeleteWho wouldn't be under stress if you were being given a twice daily dose of low voltage.
I personally think our barn has some but can't prove it and just get these eye rolls when I ask. OH WELL...
