Not good news....

Well everyone - I hate to tell you all that the baby calf didnt make it. He made it through the night, but this morning the Milk Man had to do away with him. His lungs were hurt and we are sure that his intestines were too. We didnt want him to suffer anymore and he seemed to be in pain. These are the things that make farming hard and yet these are the things that teach our kids valuable lessons about life and business. Life because things die and you cant always be the hero - spend hundreds of dollors on somthing and have it still die! Business because it is a financial loss also and the bull calves are what we use to rent out later as 'jumper bulls'.

I appreciate SO much all of your prayers for the little bugger - he was was a cutie. The fact that you were all thinking about us was touching. What a great bunch of friends I have here!!! I hate to loose a calf, especially when the mamma loves them so much. This one's mom, well - she was less than caring. But some mamma's seem to want you to help when there is somthing wrong. I have had calves born dead that the mother wont let you near them at all.. until days later at times - they are just that protective. I have had mothers kill thier babys or stomp them for trying to get up. So this is a never ending thing in our lives, so I have gotten used to it -but its still sad.

Anyway - hope you are all doing well. We woke up to -17 and it only warmed up to 3 above today - SO Mrs. M when are you coming up for a visit? I know how much you miss them thar bitter cold, snow filled, windy days!

  2. Aww. I was hoping he'd pull through. Some wouldn't have even tried so kudos to you for giving it a chance.

And I haven't started Christmas shopping yet either so its nice to know I'm not alone.

  5. Sorry about the calf, sad, but life on a farm is sometimes sad. You can only give it a try and feel glad that you did what you could:)
