Yesterday Lispy went to the farm, which is not a new thing. BUT, they are combining corn for 'high moisture' for the silo for feed for the winter. I was not at the farm much yesterday, becuase I was busier than a one armed paper hanger... the washing machine is trying to kill me - I SWEAR it is! Anyway, Milk Man, Lispy and Grandpa Chuck were in the yard talking about filling the silo. The 4020 JD was hooked to a gravity box, those are the box's I showed you in my unfinished oats post, and it was FULL of corn. They weigh some over a ton when filled with shelled corn. As a rule, we dont let the kids play on the machinery because you NEVER know what may happen. However, we do give them rides from time to time - go ahead and admonish me if you need to. This particular day the tractor was parked on a slant with a full gravity box hooked behind. For some unknown reason, Lispy got onto the tractor and started to fiddle with the gear leaver..... yes, the brake was on - but as we all know, things dont always work as they should. We do keep our machinery WELL MAINTAINED - but it got a wild hair and decided not to work. Lispy was on the tractor, it was shut off, and pulled on the lever and it started to roll. My father in law, Grandpa Chuck, saw it and bolted as fast as a 74 year old man with artheritis, bad legs and a heart problem can run. He grabbed Lispy, who at this time was coming down the steps on the tractor, and literaly THREW him from the tractor steps and he landed 7 feet away. Dad was able to get the tractor and wagon stopped and Lispy was not hurt, except his pride. Poor dad was shaking, yelling, smiling and swearing all at the same time from fear of what may have happened had he not seen what was going on... I just thank God that his angels were watching out for my Lispy... Lispy told me later that he was praying to Jesus for his safty earlier in the morning. God is good and has once again blessed our family with life. We pray every morning and night for safety and mercy - its paying off!!
Now I am sure there are going to be comments about - you should keep better track of your kids, you shouldnt let them be on ANY machinery etc.... This is understandable, and at times would agree - but, this is our way of life and fewer children are hurt or killed on farms than they are in thier own homes by parents, friends etc. Do I think that even one life lost is to many, yes!
Yet, this is our way of life and there are dangerous things that can happend. I often think of people who let thier young children race 4-wheelers, dirt bikes etc.... that is just, if not more dangerous than living on a farm. Yet it seems acceptiable that there is a large amount of danger involved. It is also dangerous to ride in a car - more can happen in a vehicle than it can on a farm and again seems to be an acceptable amount of danger. SO, I hope that you all continue to visit me here even though I put my kids in danger daily!
Later today, I hope, I will posting an award that I recieved from a very special person. So stay tuned!!
I had a person admonish me not long ago for an accident my son was involved in. He is a little wild child and gets into quiet a lot. Anyway, I was busy talking to the Hospice nurse and he somehow cracked his head with the claw end of a hammer and it required staples. So, this lady and her husband, at the funeral of the person I was helping to take care of had the nerve to ask where I was when he cracked his head open...I had a moment of ____( I won't say that here) For you see, I was taking care of the woman's dying father, that she had seen once in 4 years, because my Mother asked me to help (he was her fiance) because his daughter wouldn't. I was SOOO mad!
ReplyDeleteSorry, didn't mean to turn this into a book, things happen. And I am thankful that he is ok!

Accidents happen...at least they do at my house too. It doesn't matter how careful you are, if you have people and moving vehicles/implements things will happen.
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of one of moms responses , when somthing dangerous happened . She would cuddle us close and cry and make sure we were ok , and love us. When she was aware we were good , then she would look at us very hard and say " IM GONNA KILL YOU " lol
ReplyDeleteOh, Heidi, I started to cry when I read your post and remembered, everytime I let Nate go with my husband or dad to combine, drill, mow, rake hay, spread manure, anything I always prayed for the angels to be with him. Even though I knew how safty conscious my husband and dad were it was hard to let him go,and today they are all still his wonderful memories with daddy or gramps. And that is how our men learned, you don't learn farming from a book. So take deep breath even if it hurts because your choking on that lump in your chest. And how is Grandpa holding up today? My dad can tell us off and how much he loves us in one sentence, can be confusing but you always know where ya stand and I wouldnt be standing any where else. Now on to I won, I won. Your first give away and my first win. Oh by the way, I won, I won!
ReplyDeleteemail me at tinamariestevens@aim.com. Thank You!
Stuff happens! Sometimes dangerous stuff happens regardless of how many precautions you take. My daughter was a wild child, flying through life without a net. We were required to be extra, extra vigilant with her.

Kids always find trouble no matter where they are, and if you don't let them do it now and again they just become helpless adults. Very glad this one turned out OK for everyone involved!
ReplyDeleteOnly have a second as my boys literally tear my home apart here... but AMEN Heidi. I would so much rather live on a farm than anywhere else (trust me-- I am at the "anywhere else" right now and it is making me freaking BATTY.)
ReplyDeleteKiss Lispy from me, and tell him Auntie Mrs Mom said DON'T TOUCH THAT AGAIN!!!
Love you guys...
You do not have to defend yourself for not keeping Lispy in a bubble in a rubber room---we all have lives to live and we do the best we can with all of it.
ReplyDeleteGlad it was a scare--that will probably take him a long way!
A WONDERFUL book to read is Bandaids and Bailer Twine - It will let you know that you are not alone out there!
ReplyDeletestuff happens. Stuff you don't plan on and stuff you try to avoid.
ReplyDeleteI am glad that Lispy is ok, I am glad that Gramps is okay and I am glad he got it stopped.
We minimize the risks but we can't protect our children from everything. You don't want him to learn fear, but caution...and I bet he did there.
No matter how much we watch our children they are quicker and smarter than us, and its a fact that accidents happen, thats why they call them accidents...Just so glad that it all turned out ok. Wendy
ReplyDeleteOh I am so thankful Gramps is spry!Thank GOd your lipsy is ok! Absolutley! You do not need to defend yourself! You have to let go and let God, sometimes. I have a hard time not worrying about my kids. But there are accidents, and there is neglect. You are a great mother.Don't second guess yourself. I don't.
ReplyDeleteYour hubby is funny! You make him those rolls but girl you better have clothes under your apron!! LOL! Love you!
Hey, stuff happens. One of our neighbors gave their kid an electric motorcycle, which he rides on the street, in and out of traffic, unsupervised. The kid is 7. Crazy-dangerous. A kid getting into a vehicle and flipping levers when your back is turned...it happens. No one was hurt, and that's the important part.
ReplyDeleteFIVE boys? God bless you! I feel like a superhero with three kids!
Karen
Active boys and you cannot watch them 24/7 so it is a good thing Lipsy's Guardian Angel and Grandpa's Angels were on duty. It is just not possible to hover over them all the time, nor would you want to. Prayers for safety! They worked!! Tell Lipsy we are glad he is OK..but A mean old lady from Minnesota says he needs a Tractor Drivers License before driving again! :)
ReplyDeleteI'll be praisin' for a small little miracle that certainly transpired on your farm! Whew!
ReplyDeleteNo comments here... kids are kids and we parents are only human. They're gonna test the rules we set (surely we put them in place to take the fun out of things! lol) and we adults have things to do other than watch our children every moment of their lives. Besides how are they gonna learn to be indepedent adults if we are always protecting and guiding every thought, step and idea?
that's called life. I'm praisin god for that Grandpa! Wow talk about a hero. Worst accident I ever saw was a kid fell off a riding lawn mower and it went over the backs of her legs, nooooooo not pretty. 4 wheelers and ATV's now those can get a rise out of me from all the feet and hands knocked off and even deaths from flipping them but we all got to decide how much fun we want to have. Farmin sounds great to me.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness he was ok. It's all a part of farm life and some folks would never understand. He probably learned a good lesson and will be safer in the future. Do you line in Wisconson? I am excited to see my anut and visit Rockford again. I am 41 and the last time I was there I was in the 3rd grade. It will be one of those trip where when its over I'm sure I will be wanting to ring my mothers neck, you can bet. I wish I could visit your farm and meet your lovely boys. My hubby thinks its funny that you all have a "milkdud".
ReplyDeleteMy Dad always prayed for my safety when I lived and drove daily in the Los Angeles area. Now that I live in walk or train, Japan, I didn't think his prayers were so necessary. Then, Jun turned 2. Well, Grandpa, keep those prayers for safety coming every day! We need God's protection daily, no matter how careful we are! Praise God, Lispy is alright!!!!! (Thanks for stopping by our blog, too!)
ReplyDeleteI stopped even trying to keep track of my kids. I just have a vague idea of where they are and a sort of esp sensor that judges the shrillness of their screams as to whether or not I really need to get up and go check on them. You can't watch them all the time. I'm glad he wasn't hurt.
