freezer corn post will be up...

Sorry girls for the corn delay, but The Farm has taken over the last couple of days. We are bailing hay, combining oats, bailing straw, moving cattle and trying to keep the garden at bay. I have corn to do, saur kraut to can and re-crock, tomatos to can, pickles to make, potatoes and onions to dig.... Some people wonder why I do all this, but truth be told we live on less than $18,000 a year so its very important that I have a big garden..... no kidding - we do. The last time the Milk Man and I went out to eat alone together as a date, was sometime in the late 1990's - no lie!!! LOL The farm takes most of the cash it generates because fuel, seed, medicine for the cattle/animals and parts for machinery is SO SO SO expensive. The $ we live on is what I can make working part time and if we sell some beef cattle to locals for meat. The price of milk that you pay in the store is MOSTLY the creamry, the store and shipping being paid - we see VERY VERY little of it. Not trying to be a downer!!! Man this seems sad!!! LOL

ANYWAY!!! I will be posting today about corn for sure and hopefully the saur kraut process also. That is really pretty cool - anyone ever eaten home crocked saur kraut before?

  1. THis non-farmer does understand about the milk price issue and I think it is really sad. I think that farmers and farm owners should be taken care of and encouraged in this country. WE have to stop the out sourcing of our food to other countries and revive the wonderful art of home land production! I can not wait for the corn and saurkraut post.

  2. No, but wow does that sound good. I'm going to be making some Beet Wine. Do you think it will go good with sauerkraut?

  5. Thank you for stopping by! I to am wondering how you aren't overwhelmed by ALL that you have to do what with a new baby and all! I also know what you mean by being secluded on the ol' homestead! I too am fairly secluded out on our homestead! It can get very lonely at times! ;) Good thing that I have children, and chickens and cows and goats and... Oh my. Lots of stuff for this city girl to handle some days are definetly better than others! :) God bless you girl. Take care.

  10. You do more work in 1 day than most of us do in a week or a month. If only I had enough room to grow a garden big enough to help feed my small family. And if only the farmers and growers made 100% of the sales made with their goods. I am looking forward to learning how to make sauerkraut. Yum!

  15. My family does corn the very same way your family does. I have put up 25 quarts in my freezer. I think it taste so much better than canned or gorcery store frozen corn. I wish I had a trophy to give you for being able to raise a family of 5 boys on your yearly salary. You are doing a tremendous job. You truly are being keeper of your home and I admire you very much.

BTW, I know you don't know me (and wouldn't possibly trust me with those cute boys!), but I would babysit so you and your hubby could go on a date if we lived close. It sounds like you deserve a night out on the town!
